Whiff-le Ball: James Puts Name in Record Book Thursday, June 9th , 1955 There's a new all-time strikeout king in the league. Dwight James of the Matsuyama Farmers chalked up his 24th K for the year to establish a new single-season mark. He broke the old record, which was held by John Welke. After firing the historic record-shattering pitch, all bedlam broke loose and Dwight James was showered with a long, standing ovation by the Team Park fans. Speaking with reporters after the game, James stated his pitching philosophy, "If you can get an out on one pitch, take it. Let the strikeouts come on the outstanding pitches. Winning is the big thing. If you throw a lot of pitches, before you know it, your arm is gone." James has made 9 starts this season, posting 3 wins and 2 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .290 against him and he has 24 strikeouts in 53.2 innings with a 3.19 ERA. |
