#1 Player Named by Geiyo Islands League
Wednesday, June 22nd , 1955
At the age of 15, Wilbert Claus of the Kure Mariners could very well have his best years ahead of him.

It's a startling thought when you consider the year he had in 1955 was good enough to win the right fielder the Geiyo Islands League Most Valuable Player Award.

"See the ball, hit the ball," he said. "That's my basic approach."

The top hitter put up a .366 batting average this year, as well as a .489 on-base percentage. He played 40 games and racked up 53 hits, 3 doubles, 2 triples, 14 home runs, 45 RBIs and 42 runs scored.

He received 6 first place votes out of a possible 8. Philippe Chauvin of the Itsukushima Trawlers finished second in voting with 1 first place vote, while Émile Marion of the Innoshima Boomers finished third.
