5-Hit Barrage by Melendez Tuesday, May 18th , 1954 It's not something you read about in the sports pages every day -- a 5-for-6 day. For many, it might come around only once in a career -- and for Victor Melendez, it came around today. The 16-year-old first baseman scattered hits all over Team Park to pace the 7-5 Matsuyama Farmers victory over the Imabari Ginners. Imabari skipper told reporters in the press room that "Melendez deserves a hat-tip." "He hit some good pitches against us," he said. "In fact, according to our scouting reports, Melendez hit several that he is not supposed to be able to hit." Victor Melendez doubled in the 1st, flied out in the 3rd, doubled in the 4th, singled in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and singled in the 9th. This season, Melendez is batting at a .481 clip with 3 home runs and 10 RBIs. |
