No Easy Feat: Pitcher Wins GIL Most Valuable Player Award Thursday, June 26th , 1952
With stellar statistics and an uncanny ability to lead his team to victory, many around Geiyo Islands League felt John Welke was a shoo-in to be named most valuable player - except for the player himself.
"There's lots of great players in the league, I'm not so sure I deserve to be named among the best," he said.
But Welke has in fact been named the 1952 Geiyo Islands League Most Valuable Player Award winner.
The Onomichi Fishers ace put up an impressive year, with a 5-2 record. In 10 starts he piled up 54.1 innings, had 23 strikeouts with 18 walks and a 1.33 ERA. Welke held opposing hitters to a .166 batting average and compiled a 2.5 WAR along the way.
He received 4 first place votes out of a possible 8. Brian Vinyard of the Kure Mariners finished second in voting with 2 first place votes, while Danny DeRose of the Innoshima Boomers finished third with 2 first place votes.
