Week 12; Iceland finally catches Lisbon while Los Angeles strengthens its grip Tuesday, August 2nd , 1955 The Los Angeles Stars (44-28) continue to pace the West after another 4-2 week, stretching their division lead to three games over New York. Winners of six of their last ten, the Stars continue receiving dominant pitching from Chris Walker, while Adam Scali earned Pitcher of the Month honors after a perfect July, going 5-0 with a 2.14 ERA. Los Angeles has firmly established itself as the club to beat entering August. The New York Skyliners (41-31) endured a 2-4 week, falling three games behind the Stars. Despite the stumble, the Skyliners remain comfortably in possession of the top Wild Card berth. Rookie Jesus Gelacio was named Rookie of the Month after a strong July, giving New York another young contributor as they prepare for the stretch run. The biggest story of the week came in the East, where the Iceland Aurora (38-34) finally climbed into first place. A 4-2 week, coupled with Lisbon's struggles, allowed the Aurora to move one game ahead after spending much of the season chasing the Seafarers. Ken Roberts continues leading the league with a 2.56 ERA and now owns 12 victories, while the club has won three consecutive games at exactly the right time. The Lisbon Seafarers (37-35) have suddenly hit their roughest stretch of the season. A 2-4 week marked their second consecutive losing week, dropping them out of first place for the first time in months. Eric Snow remains among the league leaders with 18 home runs, but the offense has cooled after carrying the club through much of the first half. The race behind the division leaders remains crowded. The Providence Anglers (37-35) went 1-5 after last week's hot streak but remain tied with Lisbon for the second Wild Card spot. The Paris Lions (31-41) continued their recent improvement with a 2-4 week, trimming the Wild Card deficit to six games despite inconsistent pitching. The Mobile Monsters (31-41) enjoyed one of their better weeks of the season, finishing 4-2 while Owen Bond earned TOBA Player of the Week honors after hitting .458 with two home runs and four RBIs. Although still well behind in the standings, Mobile continues to show signs of progress. The Sicily Mafia (29-43) also posted a 5-1 week, their strongest showing in weeks. Zaccaria Cartellieri batted .500 during the stretch, while the club's offense continued to carry the load. Sicily remains nine games behind Iceland, but the recent surge offers encouragement as the season enters its final months. |
