Week 13; Lisbon regains first while the West grows tighter Tuesday, August 9th , 1955 The Lisbon Seafarers (42-36) reclaimed first place in the East after a 5-1 week, capitalizing on Iceland's stumble to move one game back in front. Winners of seven of their last ten games, the Seafarers have steadied themselves after a brief slump. Brian Robb anchored the pitching staff with two outstanding starts, posting a 0.52 ERA over 17 innings, while Eric Snow continues to rank among the league leaders with 18 home runs and a .316 batting average. The Iceland Aurora (41-37) slipped back into second after a 3-3 week, ending their brief stay atop the division. Josh McCrery earned TOBA Player of the Week honors after batting .481 (13-for-27), while Ken Roberts added another victory to improve to a league-leading 13 wins. Despite the setback, Iceland remains just one game behind and firmly in the pennant race. The Los Angeles Stars (45-33) continue to lead the West, but their advantage has narrowed after a 1-5 week. The Stars have now lost five straight games, allowing the chasing clubs to creep closer. Chris Walker still leads the league with 116 strikeouts, but Los Angeles enters the season's final stretch searching for the consistency that carried them through July. The New York Skyliners (43-35) took advantage of Los Angeles' struggles despite a 2-4 week, trimming the deficit to two games. Jessy Kok remains among the league leaders with 12 victories and 107 strikeouts, while the Skyliners continue to hold the top Wild Card position heading into a pivotal series with the Stars. The Providence Anglers (41-37) remained in the thick of both races after a 4-2 week. Although still four games behind Los Angeles, the Anglers are tied with Iceland in the Wild Card standings and continue to receive outstanding pitching. Maurice Duchemin has quietly become one of the league's top closers, lowering his ERA to 1.02 while collecting his 11th save. The Mobile Monsters (34-44) posted another 3-3 week, but were officially eliminated from postseason contention. Jamie McIntyre continued his recent hot streak, while Owen Bond struggled through a difficult week at the plate. Although the playoffs are out of reach, Mobile has shown enough improvement to build optimism for 1956. The Sicily Mafia (33-45) also finished 4-2, climbing within striking distance of .500 but officially seeing their postseason hopes come to an end. Carmelo Marsuppini and Zaccaria Cartellieri continue to lead one of the league's most productive offenses, yet inconsistent pitching once again proved too much to overcome. Despite the disappointment, Sicily's young Italian core continues to provide reasons for optimism. The Paris Lions (33-45) were likewise eliminated from postseason contention after another 2-4 week. Their offense has shown occasional flashes, but another difficult season means the Lions will miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive year. As the calendar moves deeper into August, both division races remain very much alive. Lisbon has reclaimed first place but holds only a one-game advantage over Iceland, while Los Angeles' recent slide has reopened the West, with New York now just two games back. |
