Lisbon Blanked by Sugimoto, 5-0
Tuesday, July 28th , 1953
The Lisbon Maples manager was philosophical in the clubhouse following a shutout loss to the Providence B Sabres. The Maples were overpowered by Providence B starter Tomofumi Sugimoto, who hurled his club to victory, 5-0.
"It was just one of those games -- shake it off and do better next time," said.
Over 9 innings, Sugimoto blanked Lisbon on 4 hits with 2 walks and 8 strikeouts.
"I kept them off balance. I could tell a lot of them were late on fastballs because they were fouling them off. Once you see that, it sets them up for other pitches," Sugimoto said.
"I set them up, where if they chased one breaking ball, they were going to chase another one."
To date Sugimoto is 7-6 in 18 starts with a 4.15 ERA and has 107 strikeouts in 136.2 innings.
