Cooper Slaps 5 Hits Saturday, June 6th , 1953 It wasn't just another day at the ballpark for Helmar Cooper. Cooper went on a tear and cracked hit after hit off Mobile C pitchers. When the dust settled on the diamond at Spartans Grove, he had a 5-for-7 line and a day he will long remember. And the Providence C Jackrabbits had a win, 12-8, over the Spartans. "Yeah, it'll be something nice to tell the grandkids, but it won't get me a hit tomorrow," he joked in the postgame interview. Helmar Cooper hit a two-run double in the 1st, singled in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, flied out in the 9th, singled in the 10th, grounded out in the 12th and walked in the 14th. This season, Cooper is swinging the bat at a .406 rate with 41 hits in 101 at-bats. To date he has hit 3 home runs, scored 22 runs and driven in 24. |
