Mesaros Goes Cycling
Wednesday, July 8th , 1953
Danny Mesaros did everything he could for the Iceland C Cyclones -- literally.

The 21-year-old shortstop hit a single, a double, a triple and a home run for the Cyclones, going for the cycle and helping them get past the Lisbon C Whitehawks, 14-0, at Cyclones Park.

"Yeah, I was some kind of hitter in this game," Mesaros reflected later. "It was like all I had to do was close my eyes and swing the bat."

In a game headed for the record books, Mesaros banged out 4 hits in 5 at-bats and totaled 3 RBI and 3 runs scored. Speaking with the press about the feat, he attributed it to "a lot of luck."

"A triple is so hard to hit," he said. "To just decide to get one in a game when you need it for a cycle, it's impossible. Usually something weird has to happen, the ball kicking past an outfielder or somebody falling down. There's a ton of luck in hitting for a cycle."

Danny Mesaros tripled in the 1st, singled in the 2nd, hit a two-run double in the 3rd, hit a solo-shot off Velimir Zoric in the 5th and flied out in the 6th.

This season in 18 games, Mesaros has hit at a .400 clip with 30 hits, 4 home runs, 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
