Super Swinger -- de Leon Slams 5 Hits
Friday, July 31st , 1953
Mobile R catcher Hector de Leon had a fantastic day at the plate at Nationals Park, knocking out 5 hits and pacing his club to a win, 20-11.
"It was like I was hitting Little League pitching," de Leon said after his 5-for-6 performance against the Nationals. "No offense meant to Providence R, but it was like I was back in little league again -- I could see the ball that well. But this wasn't a kid park, it was Nationals Park."
After the game, his manager elaborated on the catcher's improvements, saying de Leon spent the offseason trying to shorten his swing and stay inside the ball.
"That's what I'm trying to do," de Leon said. "Be quick to the ball and let it travel a little farther so I get a better look at it."
Hector de Leon hit a two-run home run off Paul Kiepert in the 2nd, doubled in the 4th, hit an RBI single in the 5th, singled in the 8th, grounded out in the 8th and singled in the 9th.
This year, de Leon is hitting .289 with 26 hits, 1 home run, 8 RBIs and has scored 18 runs.
