Kharkiv Tops Sofia
Thursday, August 6th , 1953
The Kharkiv Ducks earned their 1st Chairman's Cup title and now have all winter to spend basking in the glory, while the beaten Sofia Frogs will have plenty of time to wonder what went wrong.
Kharkiv became the Eastern Bloc Baseball champion for 1953 with a 7-1 triumph to capture the series 4-1.
"Both clubs are talented. We just made fewer mistakes than they did," winning manager said to the press corps at the postgame press conference. "We made the crucial plays and got the timely hits."
Sofia skipper agreed with that assessment, saying his club turned out to be "a little weak on fundamentals" at crucial times.
"I have a sneaking suspicion we will be working on fundamentals a lot next spring," he said.
On the way to the Chairman's Cup championship, the Ducks ended up in first place in the Eastern Division and compiled a 46-35 record during the regular season.
