This year, there was no one better on the mound than John Stangel. Posting 2 wins and a 2.25 ERA was only part of the story for the Den Helder superstar. For his outstanding performance in 1954 he was chosen as the North Sea Baseball League Best Pitcher winner.
From start to finish Stangel never let up. In 9 starts he recorded 2 wins and 2 losses, 48 innings, 21 strikeouts, 19 walks, yielded 47 hits, and permitted opposing batters to hit .255 against him.
He received 8 first place votes, as a unanimous winner. Tom Thompson of the Den Helder Farmers finished second in voting, while Nando Panteleo of the Norderney Hitmen finished third.
