On a Roll: Gilgore Hits for Cycle Wednesday, July 23rd , 1958 In an outing that will go down in the annals of league history, Mobile A second baseman Nick Gilgore hit for the cycle, as the Rivermen marched to victory over the Lisbon A Spirit, 8-7. Gilgore collected 4 hits in 5 at-bats, including 1 single, 1 double, 1 triple and 1 home run. He added 2 runs batted in and 2 runs scored to help Mobile A take the Ballpark of Houston AAA contest. "It was the last thing on my mind, really," Gilgore said. "I'm out there trying to get a blooper or a walk or whatever might help the team. Even if I had wanted to, hitting for the cycle is probably as much about luck as about skill anyway." Nick Gilgore singled in the 1st, tripled in the 3rd, doubled in the 5th, flied out in the 7th and hit a two-run home run off Ellerd Schreuder in the 9th. Thus far this year, Gilgore has hit .314 with 13 home runs and 45 RBIs. |
