Thursday, August 21st , 1958
He may have less experience than most of his TOBA Class R peers, but that didn't slow Ruben Morantes down at all in 1958.
At the age of 20, the New York R shortstop has been named the winner of the TOBA Class R Most Valuable Player Award.
He had a .371 batting average and a .461 on-base percentage this year. In 35 games he piled up 52 hits, 10 doubles, 1 triple, 10 home runs, 36 RBIs and 37 runs scored.
"I'm blown away by the season I was able to put together," he said. "I'm looking forward to trying to do it all again next year."
He received 7 first place votes out of a possible 10. Fernando Fonseca of the Mobile R Skeeters finished second in voting with 3 first place votes, while Mark Henseler of the Lisbon R Raptors finished third.
